It feels like the writers are just running out of things to do with their dynamic especially since apparently they want to focus on a more loving dynamic with them, which kinda ruins the whole point of their relationship which is them being foils and Rick being in authority trying to keep Morty in check. But yeah, I’m also confused as to why we haven’t gotten much of Morty lately. So I am glad that we are getting more Rick since he’s the protagonist after all and Morty is the sidekick. It would’ve been better to see Morty be the one to walk out on Rick in this case, seemingly permanently… enough for Rick to realize he really needs to change so that this character arc we have now would feel more earned. It’s like for whatever reason they wanted to flip flop the character dynamics around just to have Rick be the one who has no attachment to Morty and Morty is the one trying to get him back and it was very inconsistent and forced especially compared to previous episodes that touched on their co-dependent relationship. Rick also should’ve had more of a main role emotionally in the fake breakup episode. Rick also should’ve taken the role Morty had in the Nimbus episode of getting the wine since Morty’s whole conflict started because he was too weak to carry the wine crates, something that Rick can effortlessly do so I don’t know why they couldn’t just flip it around and have Beth or Morty cater to Nimbus while Rick takes care of the wine stuff and whatever conflict that comes up with the Narnia portal. It just felt like a typical teen soap opera than a Rick and Morty episode. The Planetina one… I saw no point in that personally besides being a rehashed Vat of Acid/Unity thing so they could’ve left this entire plotline out. And not even the Morty plots were interesting especially because they could’ve been written better. I also had a problem with season 5 being a more Morty heavy season to the point where Rick was relatively insubstantial in comparison even in episodes where he had a plot except for the Birdperson one. I noticed that since season 5, we haven’t had much episodes with Rick and Morty together. Thinking about it now, I actually wouldn’t mind an episode like that 🤔 Not something like “The Ricklantis Mixup” but an episode with just C-137 Rick and Morty and no one else. You could have an episode with Rick and Morty and no other characters and it’d still be funny, engaging and entertaining–and maybe even emotional depending on the plot. I’m not going to complain about a Rick-heavy season, but the show doesn’t work without their dynamic. It’s called Rick and Morty, not Rick OR Morty. You could’ve edited him out and focused only on Rick and virtually nothing would change. “Final DeSmithation” was a Rick and Jerry episode where Morty had only a fraction of screen time, and while Morty had more to do in “JuRicksic Mort,” he didn’t add much to the episode.

“Night Family” mostly focused on Rick and Summer to the point that Morty was practically a background character. “Bethic Twinstinct” didn’t focus on Rick, but he still had an important role in that episode while Morty just played video games. “Rick: A Mort Well Lived” focused on him, but it was kind of iffy because it wasn’t really “him.” Aaand he’s done jack shit after that episode.

He had a decent amount of screentime in “Solaricks,” but he didn’t do much except walk around and get yelled at by his father, although he did have a good moment when he convinced Rick to abandon his revenge spree. Morty’s not my favorite character, but I hope he has something to do in these last four episodes because he’s been wildly underused this season.
